Verrucae are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can persist for months or even years. They often remain undetected by the immune system, making them difficult to treat without intervention. At Toetal Footcare, we offer a range of treatment options to suit different needs.
No Treatment
Many verrucae resolve naturally over time, especially in younger patients.
Chemical Treatments
We can advise and supply over the counter treatments for you to use at home or apply stronger chemicals at the clinic. These treatments can be very effective but will often require multiple treatments over several months and the area will need to be kept dry for 4-5 days after each treatment.
Swift Microwave Treatment
The most modern and effective option, with an 85% success rate over a 6-month period.

Some treatments may cause mild discomfort, especially Swift, but it’s brief.
This depends on the chosen treatment and how your immune system responds. Swift Treatment is usually 3-4 treatments spaced at 4 weekly intervals.
Generally chemical treatment is applied every 3-4 weeks until the verrucae starts to regress. Generally chemical treatments require more applications than Swift.
Verrucae may remain unchanged on the foot for many months or even years. However, they may increase in size or spread to other parts of the foot or body.
The verrucae virus can be passed from person to person by close skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted through shared use of contaminated objects or surfaces, such as the area surrounding a swimming pool.
The virus is more likely to cause infection if the skin is wet or damaged. Not everyone who is in contact with the virus will develop verrucae.
No, if they are painless and not spreading, you may choose to leave them untreated.
No, surgery is not recommended as it can leave permanent scaring. There are limited studies to prove effectiveness of needling as a treatment option. We do not offer either of these treatment options.
